RuneScape Dungeoneering: My Adventure Hook
This month’s Choose My Adventure took me to RuneScape, and Dungeoneering turned out to be the kind of hook that could reel me in for the long haul. It’s easily some of the most fun I’ve had in Gielinor.
Into Daemonheim
Arriving at Daemonheim, my husband and I were struck by the stark white-and-gray landscape and creepy vibe. Then the game demanded we strip off every piece of gear and empty our inventories before entering. Reluctantly, we banked everything and stepped inside. Good thing we did—the dungeon’s ready room had tables loaded with food and weapons, easing our nerves. Everything you use here is instance-specific: equipment, food, resources, even currency. It’s a survival-lite system that feels natural right from the start.
The Dungeon Loop
The core loop is simple: clear floors, reach the boss, survive. Earn Dungeoneering XP to unlock deeper floors and higher Complexity levels. Complexity lets you use more of your skills, but it cuts into your final XP—a tradeoff you can adjust to suit your mood. The dungeons are randomly generated tile-based layouts, room-to-room delving that feels like old-school Wizardry or Doom. When handed gear runs scarce, you gather materials and craft on-site. It’s a satisfying ramp-up that never slams you into a wall.
Bosses and Social Play
Early boss fights, however, were HP sponges with little mechanical flair—functional but not thrilling. What made the experience shine was doing it with my spouse. While you can solo, I strongly recommend bringing at least one friend (or a full party) to share the survival and crafting. The insular progression means you leave with no physical loot, but the XP rewards are real and satisfying.
